Thibaut
Cuisset
The Absolute Outside
As an artist-in-residence,
winner of various scholarships and a freelance photographer, Thibaut
Cuisset traverses the world in his quest for a territory that best
corresponds with his ida of the absolute. These joureys are not about
documenting their geographic location or aesthetic quality. The aim
is to find an ideal landscape that surpasses typical picturesqueness,
sublime romantism or dramatics. « To eliminate picturesqueness,
emotions and pathos in order to find some kind of distance that remains
noble and never projects a cold image » (2003).
Thibaut Cuisset shows off his photographic work through ongoing journeys
to many regions : Australia, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Corsica, Turkey,
Britain, Japan, the Loire Vally Region. The locations are not considered
under the scope of the news but as landscapes created by man and by
time: urban spaces, big cities' suburbs, the countryside, sea coasts,
fluvial plains but also deserts and mountains. “By articulating
as precisely as possible a subject, the light and colors, working
by eliminating and refining, where neither anecdote nor exoticism,
pathos or picturesqueness have their place”, Thibaut Cuisset
tries to represent, in a powerful and discrete manner, the essence
of landscape. Relying on soft and voluntarily faded colors, he shows
that there is nothing fixed about a territory, that it is a result
of history and of multiple interventions.
« The Absolute Outside » presents landscapes of Iceland
and the Namib desert – « two territories not shaped by
humans ».
