Rafal
Milach
Wunderland
The project was carried
out in the „Excalibur” commercial centre on the Czech-Austrian
border. Opened in 1993, the centre quickly became the biggest duty-free
shop in the area. When the duty-free system was abolished in 2004,
Excalibur managed to stay open thanks to the difference in alcohol
and cigarettes prices between Austria and the Czech republic. With
time it has become an Eastern European version of Las Vegas –
smaller, cheaper, but also more kitschy.
Rafal Milach was born in Gliwice and now lives in Warsaw. He graduated
from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice (2002) and the Institute
of Creative Photography in Opava (the Czech Republic). He took part
in a training organized by Agence VII in France and in 2006 was selected
for a KulturKontakt scholarship in Vien.
He is a regular contributor to such magazines as „Przekrój”,
„Newsweek Poland”, „Polityka”, „DF –
Gazeta Wyborcza”.
His photos appeared in « Courrier International », «
Le Monde Economie », « Photo », « Shots Directory
», « Guardian Weekend Magazine », « DNA »,
« Diario de Noticias », « Sestdiena », «
ST/A/R ». His work has been exhibited in Poland, the Czech Republic,
Austria, Spain and Germany.
