At the border –
Na granicy
In 2004, eight Eastern and Central European countries entered the
European Community. SO called “New Europe” has become
new border of EU.
The enlargement influenced the work market in both: Western and Eastern
Europe.
In several old EU countries Eastern and Central European workers are
not illegal anymore. At the same time, the Eastern and Central European
developing markets became the target for illegal workers from outside
EU. A group of 10 photographers from Czech Republic, Georgia, Latvia,
Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia has decided to start documentary photo
essay about illegal workers in the countries of “New Europe”.
The project is to show how the immigrants make their living in foreign
countries. How do they face different culture, language and very often
lack of social acceptation. What are their problems and desires?
SPUTNIK PHOTOS has photographers at both sides of EU border.
They shoot in the countries of illegal workers’ origin (example:
their families forced to live in separation) in order to understand
better the people who came to work and live at the border of law.
The SPUTNIK PHOTOS photographers took part in the Leadership Training
for Photojournalists workshops organized by the Altemus foundation
in collaboration with photo agency VII (Gary Knight, Antonin Kratochvil)
in France in 2004 and in Czech Republic in 2005. All photographers
engaged in the project are professionals whose works are published
in the most important international newspapers, like: Time, The Times,
The New York Times, The Sunday Times, Courier International, Der Spiegel,
National Geographic Poland, Newsweek Poland. They belong to international
photography agencies: Anzenberger, World Picture Network, Photographer.ru,
Spectrum, EPA, Young Photographers United.
